To this day no one has precisely identified the first true opera, yet the genre’s birthplace is in absolutely no doubt: Italy. It was here, at the turn of the 17th century, that several cultural centres which had flourished during the high tide of the Renaissance — principally Florence, Mantua, Naples and Rome — began producing vocal works that were performed as musical drama.

Amazingly, within half-a century some of the main features of operatic form were already present in the theatrical works of Claudio Monteverdi — solo arias and duets, vocal recitatives, instrumental preludes and intermezzos were fused together to create a dramatic story arc.
